Service

Students serve patients in need of medical care by attending weekend-long free clinics across the Southeast. At RAM clinics, students interact with patients and healthcare professionals, assisting in the process of patient care and gaining valuable life experience in the process.

Local RAM Clinic Planning

Working with a wide array of community organizations, we are planning and hosting a student-led RAM clinic right in our backyard to provide much-needed medical, dental, and vision services at zero cost to the local community.

Clinic Details

  • March 9-10, 2024

  • Vance Charter School

2090 Ross Mill Rd, Henderson, NC 27537

  • Free medical, dental, and vision services to all patients. No insurance required, no ID required, no qualifying questions asked.

  • Services will be provided by licensed volunteer healthcare professionals. Remote Area Medical will provide all the necessary equipment and infrastructure. Duke student leadership is working with community partners like the Salvation Army and the Granville Vance Public Health Department to coordinate all logistics, including volunteer recruitment, fundraising, housing and meals for out-of-state volunteers, media, etc.

Travel Clinics

The core of our student experience involves multi-day engagements around the United States with RAM patients and healthcare professionals, where we provide immersive, hands-on volunteering experiences.

  • • Arrive Friday night, check into hotel

    • Wake up 4 AM Saturday, arrive at clinic ~4:30 AM

    • Volunteer in clinic until ~4-6 PM, return to hotel to rest, team dinner Saturday evening

    • Wake up 4 AM Sunday, check out of hotel, arrive at clinic ~4:30 AM

    • Volunteer in clinic until ~1-3 PM, help break down clinic

    • Return to Durham Sunday evening by ~7-9 PM

  • • Bring a change of clothes for 2 nights (including layers—it’s cold in the morning!)

    • Wallet and ID

    • A great attitude :)

  • Between funding from the Duke Partnership for Service and other on-campus collaborations, we heavily subsidize the cost of each travel clinic. Students usually pay <$50 for the entire weekend. If this is prohibitive, please reach out and we will find a work-around.

  • We typically bring around 20 students to two travel clinics each semester. Since there are more signups than available spots, we use a points system to weight members’ engagement with the club in making roster decisions.

Local Service

In addition to traveling to and planning our own RAM clinics, we are connecting students with local volunteering opportunities to foster engagement within the Durham community. Increased local involvement allows students to accrue points that count towards clinic travel opportunities.

  • Duke RAM plans on-campus fundraisers and food drives for organizations like the Triangle Literacy Council and the Alliance Pantry.

  • Duke RAM organizes group service outings for organizations such as the Durham Rescue Mission.

  • Duke RAM connects students with volunteer opportunities within local initiatives such as Root Causes and the Lay Mental Health Alliance.
